Bees, please!

The stories have been around the internet. The bee population is down significantly. I didn’t think I’d notice it around our parts… but I have. And that breaks my heart :(

I’m normally on high-alert in the summers for bees. I’m allergic (not to the extent that I could die, but if I get stung I swell up really bad and run a fever and such), so I’m used to paying attention to them so I can avoid getting stung.  I’ve normally tried to be somewhat careful when poking around in the garden because I don’t want to disturb the ones that might be on the tomato blooms (though I always do). I’ve not had that problem, if you can call it a problem, this year.

Its still too early to tell around here of the affect of it on the garden. We have jalapenos growing like crazy and I noticed a few teeny tiny bell peppers today when I came home from work. So something is pollinating. Maybe they’re just not around when I am? I’m still worried, though.

If you have a proliferation of bees in your area, give them a little whisper for me and send them on over to Ohio!

  1. Too late for this year I suppose, but we have a lavender plant in our front yard that the bumble bees love. Planting some lavender (it is a perennial) could definitely bring some more bees to your garden!
